Tick tock

Time is ticking this week into history tick by tock.

Worldcup tickets. Worldcup concerts. Bafana Bafana soon to Germany after their Brazilian camp. Barcelona's Lionel Messi kicking Arsenal out of the Champions League and then humiliating Real Madrid in Madrid a few days later. Liverpool ain't dead yet. European tabloids and their ridiculous worldcup fears. A murder, a court appearance and a funeral. BBC and Luthuli House. K's Choice and Echo Mountain. Rain. Dropping temperatures. JZ and his HIV test campaign. Don't touch me on my studio. You Tube. Electricity. Blackouts and cardgames. In 2 months it's showtime. Big showtime. Reality check. Where is that golden worldcup now? Alexandra (not refering to the cup here!!). Jeep Wrangler and mud. National flags on Mini's mirrors. Shout campaign. Australians and a Frenchman. Drinks. Pizza. No more Lie To Me on 101. Petomania in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Are the Bulls any closer to playing in orlando? Ajax and Chiefs clash in Durban and KC take the silverware up to Jozi. Cape Town's ETC have learned a lot from the Beastie Boys. George Benson jazzed Kaapstad into delirium.

Achilles

He just slightly turned last Sunday and it was all over. No evil tackle. No sprint. No pushing around awaiting an incoming corner kick. No nothing. Just by himself and one normally looking move and finished. Goodbye kicking that ball in Rustenburg or Soccer City or Greenpoint stadium. Goodbye standing there in the English shirt listening to the national anthem. Goodbye scoring that magic winning goal from a freekick. When dreams come crashing down. Achilles' revenge.

Talking about David Beckam of course. Sad. The tattooed bloke would have been in his 4th world cup - an English record. And at his age there probably wont be another chance. Although Brazil 2014 is obviously an attractive goal to sweat to.

But really bad luck. 100% Bad luck. I ain't a Beckham groupie, and I certainly ain't a Manchester Utd nor a Real Madrid nor an AC Milan supporter. And without any doubt I don't care about his US team - Galaxy or some silly name like that. But he is (was) a very good player. That we can be honest about.

So first reaction was of course that if he can't make the worldcup because of his torn achilles tendon, then his Spice Girl wife Victoria won't come too. That would crash the Rustenburg economy because her credit card mania would be a welcome gift to that place in the shadow of Sun City. I have limited knowledge of Rustenburg so can't say if there is much of the Spice Girl's expensive taste to buy there. If not in Rustenburg then certainly Sandton or the upmarket shops in Cape Town would benefit from the WAG's visit. The Beckhams apparently have already rented a flat in Camps Bay for June/July.

But weren't the Spice Girls planning a reunion gig here in SA during the worldcup? Please save us from that. We gonna miss Beckham's tricks on the pitch, that's already sad enough...

But now the UK tabloid Daily Mail reports that Beckham-on-crutches will anyway come to SA because he is a crucial ambassador (aka sales representative) for England's 2018 world cup bid. So he needs to come to attend cocktail parties and talk to the VIPs and VVIPs and VVVIPs and do some photoshoots with kids here and there. From England's pitch magician to smoozer. So Rustenburg's economy might well get a cash injection. Start testing those VISA card machines!

Oh and then I thought the following. David and Victoria have 3 kids: Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz. Wasn't there a rumour going around in the world of glamour and paparazzi that they named their kids after where they were conceived? Brooklyn in NY and Romeo in lovely Rome. Cruz I don't know, but there is a Santa Cruz in California I think. Victoria is only 35 and thus can handle another toddler. So what about a little Rust or a little Cape? A Cape Tonian can easily become a Toni. Just do it for SA's eternal glory!

The week that was (and it aint over yet)

Sometimes you wonder. Sometimes you don't.

Rain. Painfull ankle. Liverpool wins (sometimes rare these days). And Anderlecht too through to the last 16 of the UEFA cup. Two too-early mornings. Flight delayed. Flight delayed indefinitely. Flight cancelled. Honda with automatic gear box (uh!). Very overweight lady neighbour on plane. Smooth, clean airport. Relaxed transport to and from OR. Too many emails. Some good, some less good. Some promising, some less. Maybe Polokwane. Maybe George. Maybe Cape Town. Some fine tunes on the iPod. Roof leaking. And why does DSTV show rugby on channel 101 in prime time? Aren't there sports channels for that? Great food. Wine turned into vinigar. Peroni on tap.

Some more birdeye views

Some more from that lovely chopper flight from last Saturday....

From the sky

Took a chopper in Cape Town last weekend to go to Robben Island because the normal ferry to the prison-island didn't go out because of rough seas. The start of the short flight gave a great view from the Greenpoint Stadium.

95 Keerom

Still in Cape Town.

Heard about it from 2 friends earlier this year, so I had to try it out. 95 Keerom. A great restaurant in a great setting near well-known Long Street. It's at the end of Keerom Street, which is also the street with the High Court.

It's in former stables dating back to 1682. The menu is based on traditional Milanese cuisine. And I've never seen such a quality winelist together.

Hit it!!

The Dec. 4 buzz

In 1 month’s time, on December 4, we will know in what group Bafana Bafana will be during the World Cup’s first round. Exciting.

Still several qualifying games to be played in Europe, Africa and the Americas but all spotlights are moving steadily towards the draw at the ICC in the Mother City on Dec 4.

It makes a hell of a difference if you end up in a tough group or in an easier one. At least, perceived easier, because there are often some serious surprises at world cups.

So in the coming 2 weeks, Bafana Bafana will play friendly games against Japan and Jamaica. And this while Bafana is under old/new management. See what happens! And then also the final qualifying games across the globe. Especially looking forward to the Ireland-France clash on the 14th (and return game on the 18th). And also Portugal vs Bosnia-Herzegovina of course, as a world cup without the world’s most expensive player (aka Ronaldo) would be a bit sad.
